A celebration of Emsworth's maritime heritage & historic oyster fishery Emsworth's 'Seafood Week' will celebrate over one thousand years of maritime commerce in this picturesque Hampshire market town. During the week of 19th to 25th October its cafes, hotels, pubs, restaurants and retail outlets will be offering special discounts, offers and special menus to recognise its dredging and fishing history at the centre of Chichester Harbour.
Additionally the Emsworth Maritime and Historical Trust, in association with Chichester Harbour Conservancy, is organising a full programme of talks and walks to illustrate the rise and fall of Emsworth's oyster and shellfish industry. From its first Mullet fishery based in the Estuary of the river Ems in 1500 to the multi million pound Oyster dredging business created by local businessmen Foster and Kennett during the 19th century.
To compliment this celebration of the town's seafood heritage, the Emsworth Food Festival and Business Association are creating, on the last day of Seafood Week (Sunday 25th October), a traditional marketplace that will include stalls selling a wide variety of local produce, including fish and shellfish.
During the next six months the organisers and sponsors of Emsworth Seafood Week will be developing an extensive programme of events for this very special week. As we confirm the details, they will be made available at this web site (www.emsworthseasons.org.uk). Make sure you keep in touch!
An important part of its promotion will be an exciting sixty-four paged magazine called 'Emsworth Seasons'. Based on the very successful Emsworth Cookbooks (which raised over twenty-five thousand pounds for the oyster boat 'Terror' and the associated Heritage Trail) this full colour magazine will include a full programme for event. Make sure you participate in this new publication by E-mailing emsworthseafood@btinternet.com.
